The Dutch municipality and town of Renkum lies surrounded by forests and rivers along the banks of the Rhine River. It became an industrial town during the 19th century, powered by the Industrial Revolution, with factories, paper mills and a brewery. The paper industry remains today, fuelled by the forests, and in 1974 the town celebrated its 1,000th anniversary, although ancient burial mounds in the forests indicate settlement at a far earlier date. Renkum is located in an historic area that is popular with visitors for the WWII site of the Battle of Arnhelm and the medieval villages and towns including Oosterbeek, with its two historic churches, one of which is the oldest in the Netherlands. Several medieval castles lie within the area, with Renkum hotels making good bases for touring the number of Neolithic and Bronze Age tumuli scattered around the forest. Close by the town is a 200-year-old winery and farm.
