Surrounded by polmers, or land reclaimed from the water, Purmerend serves mainly as a commuter town for people working or visiting Amsterdam. The Dutch capital is easy to access via three rail lines and public bus service, though with little in the way of tourist attractions, few visitors bother to make their way to Purmerend. The original Town Hall has been converted into a museum showcasing the history and heritage of the town as it struggled through the centuries with flooding and was eventually reclaimed from the Waterlands. The Bierkade is a good place to begin exploring the town's centre. Its architecture is nice, and many businesses and eateries are located here. Koemarkt is another good area of town to check out for amenities, but Purmerend hotels can be found in virtually every corner of the city. Visitors interested in seeing an ongoing effort to protect Dutch soil from the ever-encroaching water will certainly appreciate the efforts at Purmerend.
