The village of Oosterbeek lies on the banks of the River Rhine, just five kilometres to the west of Arnhelm, with its old quarter on the river's northern bank dating back to the 10th century. The village is best known as the site of the WWII battle of Arnhelm in September 1944, during which it suffered the destruction of most of its heritage buildings. Arnhelm Oosterbeek War Cemetery is located here, as is Hartenstein Airborne Museum, both frequently visited by the families of those who fought and died in the battle. Oosterbeek hotels include the Hotel de Bilderberg, the original meeting place in 1954 of the now-infamous Bilderberg Group, comprised of world leaders, billionaires, bankers, industrialists, politicians and various royals, and the subject of many conspiracy theories over the years. The cemetery is continually increasing in size as the bodies of those killed in the battle are still being discovered after almost 70 years.
