Introduction to Nijmegen - City Centre
Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, commemorated its 200th anniversary in 2005 and is indeed steeped in history. Grand historic attractions here include the remains of the city wall, which dates from Roman times, as well as the Valkhof museum, which boasts exhibits and artefacts from that long-ago era. While both Allied and German forces bombed the city centre during WWII, there are still several fine remaining examples of architecture worth checking out. Among these are the stately Carolingian chapel, which dates to the 700s AD, and modest remnant of an imperial castle. The exterior of the 15th century Town Hall is worth a look, too. Nijmegen City Centre hotels are conveniently close to the main sights as the area is quite compact. Yet more culture awaits at the Grote Markt (Great Market), the 13th century St Stevenskerk (St Stephen's Church), and the nearby cluster of tiny houses form the 1600s that today sell souvenirs.
