The medium-sized Dutch city of Nijkerk is named for its 'New Church', built in the 13th century after the ancient chapel burnt down. Set in the central Netherlands in the province of Gelderland, the area endured many wars due to its strategic location, resulting in the church being replaced several times with the present-day version, constructed in the 18th century and still standing. During the 18th century, the town was a mercantile hub from which several citizens travelled to the New World of America, founding new cities on their arrival. Nowadays, the city is a dormitory town for nearby industrial Randstad and has developed its own industrial base since the end of WWII.
