Introduction to Monnickendam, Netherlands
Set in the municipality of Waterland in North Holland Province, the small Netherlands fishing village of Monnickendam, with its population of around 9,000, was once an important port and shipbuilding centre, especially during the 17th century Anglo-Dutch Wars. The attractive little town is home to a 17th century weigh-house, a 16th century bell tower and a notable 14th century church as well as an old synagogue. Its quaint streets became the focus of an artists' colony in the years between WWI and WWII. Monnickendam hotels make good bases for touring the Waterland region, and are set close to the historic centre of the village, with its dozens of heritage buildings, shipyards and smokehouses. The riverside harbour was once a major trade hub for the route between Holland and the Baltic countries via the River Purmer Ee and the Zuiderzee. This is a totally charming, typically Old Dutch small town, perfect for a peaceful break. other spellings: monnickendamhotels, monnickendum otel, monnikandam hotell, monnickandam hote
