Bemelen hotels are mostly used by visitors looking for a quiet base from which to explore nearby Maastricht, with its wealth of history and culture, just five kilometres to the west. Bemelen is popular with golfers, who come for the Golfbaan Het Rijk van Margraten course, located just to the south. Oude Akerstraat is the main road through the town and where eateries and rail connections with Maastricht can be found. The Dutch municipality sits at the eastern edge of its larger neighbour, in Limburg Province. It has just over 300 residents. The multicultural provincial capital of Maastricht is a haven for culture buffs, with its architecturally beautiful buildings, centuries-old cathedrals, top-notch restaurants and narrow cobbled lanes. The two main hubs of activity here are the Markt, home to the Town Hall (Stadhuis) and a market on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the Vrijthof, where St Jan's Cathedral is situated. Bemelen also makes a great jumping-off point for trips into nearby Belgium and Germany.
