Introduction to Leiden - City Centre
The city centre quarter of Leiden in the Netherlands is an ambient location with archetypal tree-bordered canals and well-preserved architecture that mostly dates from the 17th century. The confluence of two arms of the Old Rhine River is in the middle of the city and the ancient De Burcht castle stands guard over this strategic location. Molen de Valk is a windmill in the central area and one of several museums here. Visitors are allowed to climb the windmill, and its upper parapet offers great city views. Other tourist draws here include the Hortus Botanicus Gardens, the Zijlpoort city gate, an 1860s observatory and numerous churches, the finest of which is Hooglandse Kerk. Breestraat is at the heart of the city shopping precinct where there are boutiques, antique shops, bookshops and souvenir outlets. A fair proportion of Leiden City Centre hotels, cafes and restaurants are in this locality. Gourmands will enjoy the diversity of cuisine here as traditional Dutch fare as well as Thai, Italian and Greek cooking are served.
