Introduction to Kerkrade, Netherlands
The southeastern Dutch city of Kerkrade is technically separated by the German border from its previous other half, now named Herzogenrath after the ancient name of the undivided municipality. The border runs along the middle of a street in town, once marked by a low wall and generally ignored by all and sundry, and now not marked at all. Kerkrade hotels can be found in the town on both sides of the border, as can interesting architectural elements from the 1,000 years of settlement here. As with most towns in the southern Dutch provinces, Kerkrade has changed hands many times, and by the mid-19th century it was a hub for coal mining. The mines shut down in the 1970s, leaving the city and its outlying neighbourhoods dependent on other industries and tourism for revenue. Oud Ehrenstein, a 14th century castle, is the favourite attraction, and the city's rural surroundings are known for their beauty. other spellings: kerkradehotels, kerkrad otel, karkrad hotell, kerkade hote, cerkrade hotes
