The province of Haarlemmermeer can be found in North Holland on land entirely reclaimed from the water.

In the 19th century, the Dutch reclaimed this land from Haarlem Lake, giving visitors today an excellent look at clever Dutch engineering and waterworks.

A great place to learn more about the engineering is at the Museum de Cruquius, housed inside one of the area's pump stations.

Its highlight is the Cruquius steam engine, the largest ever built.
