The province of Haarlemmermeer can be found in North Holland on land entirely reclaimed from the water. In the 19th century, the Dutch reclaimed this land from Haarlem Lake, giving visitors today an excellent look at clever Dutch engineering and waterworks. A great place to learn more about the engineering is at the Museum de Cruquius, housed inside one of the area's pump stations. Its highlight is the Cruquius steam engine, the largest ever built. A nice little park is located behind the museum. The main town in the region is Hoofddorp, unremarkable except for the fact that the region's first windmill was built here in 1856. The largest public park here is the Haarlemmermeersebos, which contains a huge lake for summer swimming and a 40-metre manmade hill for winter sledding. The Stelling van Amsterdam is another interesting site as the original defence line for Amsterdam's water control projects. Haarlemmermeer hotels can be found is most of the larger towns in the region.
