Introduction to Gorinchem, Netherlands
The western Netherlands city of Gorinchem is at least 1,000 years old and set in a watery region of South Holland Province. Farmers and fishermen founded the settlement on raised land at the mouth of the Linge River, with its first mention in a 1224 document. Originally, the village had fortified walls protecting the inhabitants from raiders, with one of the town gates still seen alongside the 16th century bastions which replaced the original city walls. The city was prosperous during the Industrial Revolution and new canal and rail connections allowed more trade and spurred housing developments. Gorinchem hotels offer reasonably-priced accommodation to visitors and are located close to the old part of town containing the Great Church, an ancient windmill and a number of monumental, traditional Dutch buildings. As usual, many heritage buildings have been lost due to WWII and redevelopment, but the pretty countryside outside the town is good for walking and other outdoor pursuits. other spellings: gorinchemhotels, golrinchem otel, korinchem hotell, gorinhem hote, gorincham hotes
