The Dutch town and municipality of Ermelo, home to around 26,000 people, lies in the Veluwe district of Gelderland Province and was founded in the 9th century. Remaining a small village with a few farms and a church until the 19th century, the coming of road and rail connections with the rest of the province accelerated its development into a town. Post WWII housing estates expanded its population to its present number of 26,000. Surrounded by forests, the area is popular with German and Dutch tourists both for its camping facilites and its Ermelo hotels, and the nearby lake of Veluwemeer offers water sports, sailing and fishing, and attractive beaches. Ermelo town square is lined with bars, coffee shops and eateries, and is a great place for people-watching on summer evenings. The town is known in the province for its music festivals, featuring both classical and popular music, and drawing a good number of visitors several times a year.
