The planned city of Emmen is one of the Netherlands' best examples of orderly urban planning. Rising from the ashes of WWII, the town has grown from the incorporation of several small farming communities into a thriving blend of the old and the new. There are only a handful of historic landmarks left in town, but visitors can get a glimpse of classic Dutch settlement at Emmen's market square with its lovely church that has been there since the Middle Ages. A big attraction here is the Dierenpark, a zoo that gets more than 1.5 million visitors annually. While the core of Emmen has a great selection of places to eat, drink and shop, just outside the developed edge of town, the scene quickly turns back to its rural farming roots. The landscape in the countryside offers a wonderful environment for cycling or driving, with a number of other villages to explore nearby. Plenty of Emmen hotels are on hand, most of which are in the mid-range price category.
