Introduction to Edam-Volendam, Netherlands
The Dutch municipality of Edam-Volendam is set in the province of North Holland and comprises two towns, Edam and Volendam, with their centres set just three kilometres apart. With a total population of around 28,000, these pretty towns were founded in the 12th century as tiny villages and grew through shipbuilding to become prosperous centres by the 17th century, with Edam alone home to 33 shipyards. Nowadays, the town of Edam is world-famous for its delicious cheese, with its weekly Sunday cheese market and its cheese warehouses unique attractions for visitors. Edam-Volendam hotels offer traditional Dutch hospitality as well as cuisine based on the traditional cheese to many visitors year round. The towns and their ancient streets are crammed with authentic 17th century buildings lining quiet canals and quaint bridges, with picturesque monuments and pretty squares a journey back in time for visitors. Around the harbour are cafes, bars and small restaurants, perfect for a romantic dinner. other spellings: edam-volendamhotels, edem volendem otel, hotell edam-volendam, edamvolandem hote
