Introduction to Dordrecht, Netherlands
The historic Dutch city of Dordrecht, set in the south of the country, was one of the six most important Middle Ages trade hubs in the entire region. The Old City centre is still a showcase for the picturesque architecture of the period. Set at the inland end of a long North Sea inlet formed around the mouth of the River Thure is its ancient harbour, fed by the confluence of three rivers and the focus for tall ships from the 17th century onwards. Nowadays, the city is home to over 100,000 people and is a commercial hub as well as a tourist destination. For history and architecture buffs staying in Dordrecht hotels, there are many fine heritage buildings to explore, including the 15th century Great Church, with its massive tower containing 67 bells, glorious stained glass and a medieval clock. Also of interest are the elegant Town Hall, the ancient city gate with its hexagonal tower and the rows of tall traditional Dutch houses lining the canal and river banks. Nearby is one of the largest national parks in the country, Biesbosch, with a unique freshwater tidal area. other spellings: dordrechthotels, otelin dordrach, dodrecht hotell, dodrech hote, dodrasht hotes
