In the northeastern Dutch province of Drenthe is the small town of Borger, a traditional farming area with little in the way of tourism. This part of the Netherlands has been remote and sparsely populated for centuries, but travellers in search of rural Dutch landscape and a traditional way of life will find plenty of both in and around Borger. Known as the country's cycling province, Drenthe is a growing destination for cycling holidays and distance touring. Borger hotels provide a useful stopover point for cyclists on tour, as the town contains just enough amenities for a decent meal and practical shopping. The only historic site of note in town is the De Dorpskerk church, a lovely stone structure set among green lawns. If more detailed facilities are needed, the large city of Assen is just down the road with excellent rail connections and a large range of amenities.
