Introduction to Beetsterzwaag, Netherlands
The little West Frisian village of Beetsterzwaag lies in the municipality of Opsterland, in the eastern part of the Netherlands province of Friesland, and is home to just over 3,500 residents. For several hundreds of years, the area was the playground of the wealthy and titled, set in outstanding, if flat, national beauty and holding several mansions and grand buildings. It's still a green and pleasant place to stay, having developed in the late 19th century to suit the Dutch elite's preferences. Lines of 19th century continental-style terraced homes and shops give a genteel feel to the narrow main street. Several country house-style Beetsterzwaag hotels are located at the edge of the village in pretty countryside, with a few bed and breakfasts in the village. This is a quiet and peaceful area of the Netherlands, perfect for a few days' stress-busting getaway. Nearby is Alde Feanen Nature Reserve, set on the banks of the Ee River, a favourite destination for birders.
