Introduction to Amsterdam - Zaandam
Located less than 30kms north of Amsterdam, the town of Zaandam has a population of roughly 73,000 inhabitants. It is part of Zaanstad municipality, which consists of seven towns, with Zaandam being the biggest. There is a train station in the centre of town which provides easy access to Amsterdam, while the A8 passes just to the east and is the main road link to the capital. Just outside the railway station is a shopping esplanade and there are a number of bars and restaurants in the area, too. There isn't a great deal in terms of tourist attractions in the town itself, but Tsar Peter House was built in 1632 and is one of the Netherlands' oldest wooden houses. The area around the Zaan River, which runs through the town centre, is popular for walking, cycling and boating, and features a number of windmills and old wooden buildings as well as open green areas.
