Introduction to Amsterdam - Slotermeer
Amsterdam’s Slotermeer district is a popular location to find a variety of Amsterdam hotels. Slotermeer, with its name coming from a lake which was drained in the 17th century, enjoys a strategic location west of the city centre. This former lake site has been redeveloped as a park and an ecologically protected green area, with a newly dug smaller lake in its centre, Sloterplas. Here a variety of water sports like canoeing, fishing, swimming and sailing are on offer. Many of Slotermeer’s streets are named after Dutch writers and those who fought with the Resistance during WWII. The area boasts a bustling daily outdoor market and a shopping centre. A new museum of urban redevelopment, the Van Eesteren Museum was opened in 2010, and there are also artists’ studios housed in a former funeral home. Good public transport means easy access to a number of top attractions and sights throughout Amsterdam like great museums and galleries.
