Introduction to Amsterdam - Amsterdam Noord
Amsterdam Noord is the district contained within the district between the Amsterdam Northern Orbital Road and the north bank of the River Ij. From central Amsterdam, the district can be reached by taking one of the free ferries across the Ij that depart from De Ruyterkade at the back of the main city railway station. Amsterdam Noord hotels are dotted around the quarter and include one option that is a converted barge. Restaurants in the area range from ambient places on the waterside and Amsterdam's traditional brown cafes to a facility that is housed in the old NDSM shipyard canteen. The latter is a popular dining venue especially favoured by families. There is a big indoor skatepark and also several venues offering live entertainment. Away from the banks of the Ij, the area gives way to pictorial villages such as Zunderdorp and Dutch farmhouses. Exploring is easily accomplished on foot, by bicycle or with a canal tour.
