Introduction to Amsterdam - Jordaan
The Jordaan area of Amsterdam in the Netherlands is adjacent to the city centre. It is sandwiched between the city centre precinct and the Lijnbaansgracht Canal. The district was a hub for artisans, but is now one of the city's more upmarket locations. The streets here are lined with majestic buildings that look down on picturesque canals. Many of these old buildings, some of which date to the 16th century, now house Jordaan hotels. The streets are home to art galleries, speciality shops, bars and some of the city's finest restaurants. Noordermarkt is one of the venues for street markets in the area. The Anne Frank House and the iconic Westerkerk church are both on its edges. The artist Rembrandt lived in the district for a time and he is interred in Westerkerk's graveyard. A feature of this district is inner courtyards, which during summer are venues for musical recitals and art expositions. The Rijksmuseum, Dam Square and Stationsplein are a few of the city draws within walking distance. Visit our Amsterdam Travel Guide
