Introduction to Amsterdam - Eastern Islands
The Eastern Islands area of Amsterdam is a great place to base yourself when visiting this stunning city as it is home to a lot of Amsterdam hotels, many of which line the banks of the picturesque Amstel River, and is close to various stunning attractions of the city. These islands are conveniently linked by bus to Central Station, where a vast amount of restoration and redevelopment is going on. The same bus route links the other group of Eastern Islands, currently also being redeveloped. Ferry transport is available to Java and KNSM islands. These two islands are now linked and were once home to many warehouses that stored the cargo of the Royal Dutch Steamship Company. In fact, KNSM Island’s name comes from the first letters (in Dutch) of the company’s name. There are some interesting old buildings on these islands, but the warehouses have been replaced by modern buildings and housing developments as well as cafes with terraces where visitors can have coffee and watch the activity on the docks and the passing barges.Visit our Amsterdam Travel Guide
