The city of Alphen aan de Rijn lies along the banks of the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) river in the less densely populated 'Green Heart' of the Netherlands.

The region was settled over 2,000 years ago during the Roman occupation and was an army base with a number of fortifications both outside and in the town.

By the17th century, the town was important as a commercial hub for transport along the river.

The city developed fast in the mid-20th century, losing a number of heritage buildings to high-rise developments along the way.

Although there is a good choice of Alphen aan de Rijn hotels, the same can't be said for visitor attractions.

Apart from a Dutch history theme park, a bird sanctuary and Zegersloot Recreation Park, there are a few ancient churches, an attractive historic water mill and the Old City Hall, now a music school.

For visitors fascinated with post-modern design, however, the new Town Hall is considered to be somewhat revolutionary for its use of acres of glass.
