Most of the pubs and bars are concentrated here. The Thamel and Freak Street bars attract budget travellers, and a few young Nepali men hoping to meet up with Western women. Many have a ‘happy hour’ in the early evening, meaning free popcorn. During the high season, pubs and bars often continue serving until the late hours behind drawn curtains and locked doors.
The area nearby the Kathmandu Guest House has developed into a pretty lively little neighbourhood in the evenings, with competing sound systems blaring across the alleyways, raucous revellers looking for action, and the cops and the rickshaw drivers waiting outside for closing time.
The casinos are off-limits to Nepalese, and visited mostly by bored Westerners and avid Indians staying at the deluxe hotels. Admission is free, and players get complimentary food and drinks.
The most interesting after-dark activity can simply be to wander the streets of old Kathmandu. While wandering the streets after dark, listen out for traditional Nepali music. In the evenings, impromptu bands often perform at small temples all over the city.
