By road: Kathmandu is connected with India via the lush plains of the Terai by scenic highways. Visitors are allowed to drive their own cars but an international carnet is required for the vehicle.
The road network in Nepal is not very developed and only a few major roads are sealed. You can also drive from Lhasa to Kathmandu in two to three days non-stop.
It is also possible to travel by bus from Darjeeling to Kathmandu, across the southern lowlands. The Sajha Yatayat Bus Company operates a bus service from Lhasa in Tibet to Kathmandu.
By air: Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan airport is the only international terminal in the country. Not many airlines operate direct flights to Kathmandu, although you will find flights from Amsterdam, Doha, Bangkok, Vienna, Bhutan, Lhasa, Karachi and Delhi.
If you wish to use this facility you can do so by paying in advance. The rates are made visible as they are exhibited on the board for your security. An Airport Tourist Bus shuttles passengers between Tribhuvan International Airport and Downtown Kathmandu while many public buses stop just outside the airport and most go to central Kathmandu, to Ratna Park and the Old Bus Park.
