Chitwan Travel Guide - Attractions
Sitting at the foot of the Himalayas in the Terai region of Nepal, the park is rich in flora and fauna, and boasts one of the world’s last populations of single-horned Asiatic rhinoceros as well as being one of the only remaining homes of the magnificent Bengal tiger.
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, Chitwan now engages in the protection of many of its endangered residents, and the interesting Gharial crocodile and elephant breeding centres are a highlight of any visit here.
Kasara Display Centre: located near the park’s headquarters, this facility has educational displays on the animals and vegetation in the park. Bikram Baba, a notable Hindu religious site, is nearby and can be visited at the same time.
Sauraha Visitor Centre: displaying comprehensive information on the park, the exhibits here provide great insight into the wildlife and conservation programmes at Chitwan. On-site is a souvenir shop that sells a selection of handicrafts and other products produced by local women.
Elephant Breeding Centre: the park is known for its work towards the protection of elephants and this centre plays an active role in this mission. Displays provide information on calves born in the park as well as captive elephants.
Libraries: there are two small libraries, one at Kasara and the other at Sauraha. These libraries provide shelter for orphans and areas for games and recreation. Visitors and donations are welcome at both facilities.
