Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and hotels in Lumbini will invariably pay some sort of homage to the fact that Buddha was said to have eaten his first meal here, in this Nepalese town close to the border with India. Many monasteries surround the town and this is a very holy region. Lumbini hotels may overlook the sacred Bodhi tree or any of the sared monasteries that date from ancient years. The Ashokan Pillar and the Maitreya Temple are usually within walking distance of all accommodations in Lumbini. Onward transport links south to India are prevalent and inexpensive – buses are by far the most popular mode of transport across the border. Alternatively, some hotels in Lumbini offer a retreat from the main religious and tourist attractions. You can spend some very quiet time in these Lumbini hotels as they face away from the main roads and contain their own traquil gardens, ponds and points of reflection.
