Introduction to Karas - Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei, which means 'dead end marsh' is an arid but arresting salt and clay pan that is a drainage basin without outflows, full of high red dunes and located in the inhospitable southern regions of the Namib Desert, in Namibia's Namib-Naukluft National Park. Sossusvlei often refers to the surrounding area, including the neighbouring regions of Dead Vlei and other high dunes which constitute a major visitor attraction in Namibia. The colours of this striking region are pink, red and orange. Don't worry, Sossusvlei hotels are equipped with air-conditioning to keep the intense heat at bay. These dunes are among the planet's highest. Many of them are above 200 metres, with one of them, Big Daddy, topping out at about 380 metres high. Some dunes actually support a surprising array of vegetation, which is kept alive by underground rivers that seasonally flood the pans.
