Introduction to Karas - Keetmanshoop
Keetmanshoop (Keetman's Hope) is a sleepy town in the Karas region of southern Namibia in southwestern Africa. It lies on the Trans-Namib Railway, which connects the capital of Windhoek and Upington in South Africa. The town is named for Johann Keetman, the German industrialist who founded the city. Two nearby quiver tree forests and Keetmanshoop church are among the most popular attractions. Before colonial times, the community was called Black Marsh, which refers to a local spring. In 1785, Guilliam Visagie, the first white settler, arrived. Another noteworthy structure is the Keetmanshoop Museum, located in what was once the Rhenish Mission Church, which dates to 1895 and was named a historic monument in 1978. It uniquely blends Gothic architecture cast in African stone. Also worth a look are the Post Office, which dates to 1910, and the railway station building. The Naute Dam, Fish River Canyon and Spitskop Ost farm are not far away either. Keetmanshoop hotels are simple but satisfying.other spellings: keetmanshoophotels, otelin ketmanshop, keetmanshup hote, kitmanshop hotes
