Yangon (Rangoon) Travel Guide - Introduction

Dominating the Buddhist city is the gold stupa of Shwedagon Pagoda which is said to hold a hair from Lord Gautama Buddha. Scattered throughout the city and the neighbouring areas, you will find several historical sites, museums, art galleries, beaches and villages to explore.
Yangon is often portrayed as a sleepy town which is terribly unorganised and poverty stricken, but this not entirely true. The city’s public transportation is chaotic and the streets are no better, but amidst this chaos lies a charming city that is rich in history and culture.
Nevertheless, the city offers holiday makers a trip they are unlikely to forget and are guaranteed to enjoy. Tourist comforts are well looked after with several luxurious and mid-range hotels found in the city. International cuisine is not difficult to find and there are several places to enjoy French, Thai, Italian, Korean and traditional Burmese. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy shopping at local markets and shops which are scattered around Yangon.
Street vendors sell anything and everything from fake Gucci sunglasses to the latest movies. The nightlife in Yangon continues to bring out the eclectic nature of the city with its rooftop bars and nightclubs, cultural dances and traditional Burmese music at the national theatre. There is always something to do in the city as well as enjoying the many festivals that the city celebrates with parades and lights.
It isn’t difficult to get to Yangon as it has its own international airport which is not too far from the city. The best times to visit the city would be when the monsoon seasons are just over as the days are cooler.
