January Festivals
Independence Day: is celebrated all over Myanmar in January. This is the day that the country gained independence from Britain. Flag raising ceremony is carried out at the People’s park which is followed by individual flag raising ceremonies at homes. A fair is held for seven days at Kandawgyi Lake.
February Festivals
Union Day: is celebrated in February to commemorate the Pin-lon Treaty. The Union Flag is ceremoniously carried to People’s Park where a number of events are carried out.
Paya Pwe (Pagoda Festival): is also held in February at Shwedagon pagoda. Celebrations are great fun with fireworks and crackers.
Armed Forces Day: held in remembrance of the Burma Independence Army who went to war in 1947. There are speeches, military parades and drills and many other events. Held in February.
Buddha’s Birthday: is one of the most important religious events in the country. Acts of good deeds are carried out on this auspicious day in April which includes: the releasing of animals and paying homage to monks. A procession of young girls carry earthen jars to the three Bodi trees within the compound of the Shwedagon Paya.
October Festivals
Thidingyut Festival of Light: the three day festival in October marks the day Lord Buddha returned to earth after spending three months at the Celestial Abode. Oil lamps and candles are lit throughout the streets which are used to welcome the Lord Buddha back.
