Attractions in Mandalay
Mandalay Fort: is an outstanding fort built by King Mindon in 1860 to guard the wooden palace. This remarkable fort was ordered to be built when the king moved the capital city from Amarapura to Mandalay. Located beside Mandalay Hill, the fort boasts 8-metre walls with a watchtower at each corner. Now some parts of the fort are still used as a military base.
Mandalay Hill: the major landmark of the city, which also gave the name to Mandalay, Mandalay Hill has long been known as a holy mountain. Lord Buddha prophesied that the hill’s foot there would be a metropolis of Buddhism. The hill offers breathtaking views of the city and a very relaxing ambience. There are also many shops where you can obtain souvenirs and food.
Pahtodawgyi Pagoda: this beautiful pagoda standing outside the old city walls is one of the most important historical buildings in Mandalay, dating back to the year 1820. The highlight of the pagoda is probably the lower terraces with marble slabs depicting significant scenes from the Jataka. An inscription stone found within the temple precincts also shows the history of the pagoda’s construction.
Maha Myat Muni Paya: is the second holiest pilgrimage site in Myanmar, boasting a 4.5-metre high Buddha statue made of gold and precious jewels. The image was brought from Rakhine State to Amarapura near Mandalay in 1784, during the reign of King Bodaw Paya. There is a special ceremony each morning to wash and polish the face of the image.
Kuthodaw Paya: is a very interesting site to visit as it is the site of the world’s largest book. Enjoying an ideal location at the foot of Mandalay Hill, Kuthodaw Paya was built by King Mindon in the 1800s and boasts white stupas containing the complete text of the Tripitaka, Theravada Buddhism's most sacred text.
