January Festivals
Independence Day: is celebrated across Myanmar with the most extensive celebrations being held in Yangon, where a seven day fair is held at the Kandawgyi Lake.
Kachin Manao Festival: is celebrated in Kachin to commemorate the day that the state joined the Union of Myanmar in 1948.
Nat Festival: held in Kachin to ensure a good harvest. You will find that many songs, dance and traditional ceremonies take place during this period.
Tabung Full Moon Day: this is the auspicious time to begin building new pagodas. Existing pagodas hold many colourful ceremonies throughout the day.
Armed Forces Day: is also known as Resistance Day. There are firework displays and parades.
April Festivals
Thingyan (Water Festival): is held to commemorate the Burmese New Year. Throughout the day, a nationwide water fight is held with everyone joining in, young, old, rich and poor. The water is used to wash away the bad luck of the old year.
September Festivals
Phaung Daw U Kyaung Festival: celebrated at Inle Lake in the Shan State. Statues of Buddha are placed in decorated boats and carried around the lake. There are boat races, dances and traditional music throughout the celebration.
October Festivals
Kyaukse Elephant Dance Festival: richly decorated life size elephants sing and dance to traditional music the day before Thadingyut.
November Festivals
Shwezigon Pagoda Festival: celebrated in Bagan with candles and fireworks, dances, songs and plays.
