Yangon became the capital of Myanmar in 1885 when the British took over northern Myanmar. Prior to this, Mandalay was the capital and Yangon was just a small seaport town. In 1841, the city was almost completely destroyed by fire but was rebuilt with the efforts of the people and the government. However, it was badly damaged in the Second Anglo Burmese War about ten years later. The British rebuilt the city and renamed it Rangoon but it was renamed Yangon when Myanmar gained independence.
