Introduction to Yangon - Airport
Burma's primary international airport lies in Mingaladon just 15kms to the north of Yangon's downtown area and is the second largest in the country. Its original terminal, built in 1947, handles domestic flights within the troubled country, with the new terminal constructed as part of the airport's renovation in 2007 reserved for international flights. Passenger throughput per year averages around two million, with 16 Asian, Southeast Asian and Indian carriers operating routes to and from the facility, as well as Myanmar Airways. No Western airlines operate here. Yangon Airport hotels are located in Mingaladon, just a few minutes walk from the complex, with the city centre a 20-minute drive away. The cityscape is a fascinating mix of colonial architecture with Chinese, Burmese and Indian influences and, although decaying, gives a unique glimpse of a 19th century colonial capital. The magnificent gilded and jewelled Shwedagon Pagoda is a must-see, but some tourists refuse to entry the country for fear of supporting the oppressive military regime. Visit our Yangon Travel Guide
