Formerly called Maymyo, Pyin Oo Lwin is a hill town in the centre north of the country. It is about a one hour drive or train journey from Mandalay and it is part of the Mandalay Region, called the Mandalay Division. It is relatively high altitude and hotels in Pyin Oo Lwin are often lovely teak buildings that let in some of the smoky mountain mist. Many of the new hotels in Pyin Oo Lwin have been constructed only over the last five or ten years and so refurbishments are not necessary. As in the rest of the country luxury five star hotels such as those found in Bangkok or Singapore are not located here. Very comfortable Pyin Oo Lwin hotels exist, however.
