Introduction to Mandalay, Myanmar
Mandalay is the old royal capital of Burma. No visit to Burma would be complete without spending at least two days in this beautiful and historic city. Located roughly 700kms north of Yangon, the city is dominated by the Royal Palace. Although the original palace was burned down in the 1940s, it has been re-built to mirror the original. Many of the intricate carvings in the palace were lost in the fire and could not be re-created, but good examples of the type of carvings that once adorned the palace can be seen at the Shwenandaw Monastery. Another amazing sight is the Kuthodaw Pagoda, which is home to 729 white stupas. The re-built Atumashi Monastery it also worth visiting, as it looms over the city. Most Mandalay hotels are located within walking distance of the palace. Less than 100 miles from Mandalay, a must-visit is the incredible ancient city of Bagan, which features hundreds of pagodas and can be reached by meandering along the Irrawaddy River.Visit our Mandalay Travel Guide
