Kyaikhtiyo hotels will all strive to offer a room with a view of the world famous Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, an extraordinary pilgrimage site that features a modest gold pagoda sitting on the top of a bulbous rock that hangs precariously off the edge of a towering cliff. Many hotels in Kyaikhtiyo will echo the gold colours of the Pagoda - the rock has been painted in gold leaf and its regularly updated to ensure maximum glitter brilliance. According to folklore the Pagoda grew out a strand of hair donated by the Buddha during one of his fleeting visits. Kyaikhtiyo hotels are a mixed bag since so many pilgrims that pass through Kyaikhtiyo stay at the monasteries that dot the town. However, foreign travellers and other visitors are well catered for with a good range of accommodations all located within walking distance from each other. Some are quite expensive, but all tend to offer dining areas that overlook the Pagoda which is dramatically spotlit at night.
