Introduction to Kalaw - City Centre
Kalaw is a sleepy, easy-going town in the wild mountains of Shan State in central Myanmar. It is within Kalaw Township, Taunggyi District. Set at an elevation of 1,300 metres, the town was a popular hill station getaway decades ago for British colonials who were in search of cooler climes. Kalaw featured heavily in the novel by German author Jan Philipp Sendker, Das Herzenhoren. Strolling through the daily market, which is held on a rotating basis among various villages, reveals local foods - meats, vegetables, spices and herbs - of exotic appearances and flavours. Kalaw City Centre hotels are wonderfully affordable, but don't expect all the trappings of a Western hotel experience. Trekking in the nearby hills is a popular activity here. Walk through the hill town will reveal a number of well-preserved colonial villas where high ranking British once resided. Some local treks involve overnight stays while treks in some nearby areas go on long ascents and then long descents.other spellings: kalaw otel city, kealaw hotell center, kalaw city hote, ka law hotle center
