Bagan is one of Burma’s most venerable urban centres with a history stretching back for thousands of years and it was formerly known as Pagan. Bagan hotels include some recently built by the ruling military junta though some retain some of the architectural splendour that has seen the town listed as a potential UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many hotels in Bagan are very beautiful and it is no wonder that UNESCO is seeking heritage listing for this exquisite historical city. New additions like motorways, golf courses and sightseeing towers may be positive or negative developments, this naturally depends on the outlook of the visitor. Bagan hotels may mimic the shape of the local temples with their glittering stupa, Southeast Asian tear shaped domes that any traveller to the region will instantly recognise. Gold leaf and gold plate are used to decorate the stupa and as a result they shimmer like magic in the heat of the sun.
