Introduction to Bagan - New Bagan
Bagan is located in the north of Myanmar (formerly Burma) and boasts more than 2,000 pagodas and temples. The climate here is warm and sunny all year round since there is no real rainy season in the region. Direct flights fly daily from Yangon, Chiang Mai and Siem Reap via Air Bagan. Many Bagan hotels are situated along the Irrawaddy riverfront where visitors can sit sip tea and watch the sunset after a day of sightseeing. Most of the city’s tourist draws are in Old Bagan, while New Bagan, also known as Thiripyitsayar, is the newer part of the city and full of restaurants offering a vast array of choice, from traditional Myanmar fare and Chinese influenced cuisine to international food. The city temples and pagodas date back over 1,500 years and visitors can arrange tours of the pagodas by car, horse and cart, or alternatively by hiring bicycle and touring the city alone. Shopaholics will love the city markets where they will find beautiful local artworks, bamboo items and handmade cloth. Those brave enough to conquer the 777 steps to the peak of the monastery atop Mount Popa will be rewarded with spectacular views of the city.
