Hiking and trekking: with its superb location near the High Atlas mountains, Marrakech is an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding areas. The mountains are home lots of communities and Berber tribes that have managed to retain their identity and culture over the centuries. There are a multitude of established trails for walking and trekking.
And although it's possible to trek all year round, the best time is during the summer months when the weather is better. Jebel Toubkal is North Africa’s highest peak and one of the most popular ascents. The adventure begins from the small village of Imlil, which can be reached in little more than an hour from Marrakech. It is advisable to book with one of the recognised travel agencies in the city.
The best skiing can be found at Oukaiden in the High Atlas. It is possible to arrange your own transport and hire equipment when you arrive, or alternatively, you can book with a travel agent and let them handle all of the arrangements. Another place worth considering is Ifrane in the Middle Atlas.
Horse and camel riding: are both popular with visitors to Morocco and can easily be arranged. Camel riding can be done in the Atlas mountains and is a far better experience than you will find in the tourist resorts on the beaches. There is a riding club in Marrakech that runs pony treks in the Middle Atlas. For something a little different, you can travel across the mountains by mule and skis (known as mule-skiing) between the months of February and April.
