Marrakech (Marrakesh) Travel Guide

Museums & Galleries

Museums & Galleries in Marrakech (Marrakesh)
Dar si Said Museum: the former 19th century palace is now a museum and houses a collection of artefacts from Morocco through the ages, including pottery from Safi and Tamegroute, carpets, wood carvings, daggers, musical instruments, jewellery, kaftans and leatherwork. On the ground floor are displays of Berber clothes and jewellery, some of which are still worn by the people in the mountain tribes.
The highlight is the salon on the first floor with its carved cedar ceiling painted in the zouak style. The 10th century marble basin has decorative eagles and griffins and was brought to Morocco by the Almoravid sultan. The museum courtyard has a fine collection of elaborately carved and ornamented door and window frames.
Riad Ezzitoun El Jadid. Open 09:00 to 12:00 and 15:15 to 18:15, Weds – Mon.
And it features exhibitions of Berber and Tuareg jewellery and textiles, marriage curtains and fabrics, cobalt blue pottery from Fez, tapestries, manuscripts, and many other masterpieces. There is a separate room that is dedicated to Majorelle's work.
Avenue Yacoub El Mansour. Open: 08:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 19:00 during the summer; and 08:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 during the winter.
Museum of Marrakesh: located next to the Medersa Ben Youssef, the museum is housed in one of the finest 19th century buildings remaining, the Dar M’Nebhi Palace. It is probably fair to say that the stunning architecture attracts more visitors than the museum pieces. The central atrium is over 2,000 square metres and is covered by a domed tent supported with columns.
Dar Bellarj: is a small museum that was originally a bird sanctuary where injured cigognes would rest. It now has good selection of temporary exhibitions that feature traditional Moroccan art.
Maison Tiskiwin: not far from Dar Si Said is the elegant townhouse of Maison Tiskiwin. It belonged to Dutch expatriate Bert Flint, who was a collector of local Marrakech art. The museum is open to the public and exhibits textiles, basket works and jewellery.
Rue de la Bahia. Open: 09:00 to 19:00.
