Shopping: one of the best places for shopping, even if you don't intend to buy anything, are the souks (markets) found in the network of alleys on the northern edge of Jemaa-el-Fna. The chaotic maze of crowded lanes may be intimidating at first, but try not to worry about getting lost and simply enjoy the experience. The area is divided into sections that sell similar products, and among the many different items for sale are brassware, jewellery and clothing.
There are plenty of tradesmen that have been plying their trade for many years, including carpenters, tailors and ironworkers. The main thoroughfare of rue Souk Smarine has coverings and makes for a good place to hide from the sun. Souk el Kebir has a range of traditional Moroccan clothing and leatherwear, while Souk el Attarin is best for dyed goods, prices and metalwork.
There are no mixed public hammams anywhere in Morocco. The upmarket hotels often have private hammams which are sometimes open to guests. They are usually far more luxurious and expensive than the regular places. Make sure you take with you soap, a towel, swimsuit or extra underwear and a scrubbing mitten (available from the souks).
