Morocco’s northern coastal area has miles of beaches including Agadir, which are ideal for the sun-worshipper. Inland, the towering Atlas mountains are home to the Berber tribes and some of the tallest peaks in Africa. It is a great place for the more adventurous to trek and discover the many different trails. Beyond the Atlas mountains is the huge Sahara desert and the fascinating old towns that are worth the extra effort to get to.
Travelling in Morocco can have its fair share of frustrations. Women may receive more attention than they are used to and aggressive and annoying guides may lie in wait at the tourist areas. But don't let that put you off as people are known for their hospitality and generosity. There really is something for everyone here; from lazy days spent on the beaches, marvelling at the ancient wonders, skiing in one of the few resorts in Africa, to haggling for bargains in the shops and enjoying the local cuisine.
Above all, Marrakech is known for Djemaa el-Fna square that comes alive when the sun go;es down. Witness one of the most authentic and spectacular shows you will ever see, with acrobats, snake charmers, dancers, musicians and fortune-tellers trying to grab your attention.
Fez is the oldest of the four imperial cities and arguably the most impressive. The Medina of Fes el Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the largest car-free urban area in the world. The old gates and crumbling city walls add to the charm and mystique. Other sites worth visiting include the Dar Batha Museum, the Royal Palace, the Er Rsif and Andalous mosques, and the Nejjarine square and fountain.
Casablanca is a large, modern city of nearly four million people that summarises Morocco’s extremes. The small medina and impressive Hassan II Mosque contrast with the city's cosmopolitan and industrial side. It is certainly the most liberal of the country's cities with young people dressed in designer labels and women wearing revealing clothing openly flirting with the opposite sex.
