January Festivals
Fatih Muharram: is a 10-day festival that commemorates Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. It is celebrated throughout the country and culminates in processions and religious events.
Marrakech International Marathon: is scheduled every year in late January, when the weather is at its coolest. More than 5,000 people take to the winding streets on a course that takes participants through some of the most interesting parts of the city. As well as the full-length marathon, there is also a half-marathon for the slightly less fit.
Fete du Throne: commemorates Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne in 1999. Towns provide free entertainment including a fantasia, when armed horsemen in full combat dress demonstrate their agility and show their loyalty to the makhzen.
June Festivals
National Festival of Popular Art: is held in Marrakech and is one of the oldest festivals of its kind. It showcases traditional arts including dance, poetry, music and song and features interpretations of Moroccan plays and Berber music. The festival mainly takes place in the ruins of the El Badi Palace and attracts people from all over the country. In the last several years, dance troupes and artists from other countries have been invited to perform.
August Festivals
Setti Fatma Moussem: Large crowds are attracted to the Ourika valley for this festival, looking to escape the heat in Marrakech. Setti Fatma is approximately 40 miles southeast of the Red City and hosts one of the most popular moussems every year.
The Marrakech Film Festival: is a relative newcomer on the film festival circuit. Despite a relatively slow start, the organisers are hoping to turn it into a Moroccan version of the Cannes Festival. Past events have been held in the city's famous square, the Place Jemaa el-Fna, and have attracted top names like Scorsese, Coppola and David Lynch.
