There are still plenty of places that 'belong' to the 1960s, although in recent years there has been an increase in the popularity of other music styles such as hip-hop and rap. Strip bars have been part of the scene for many years, and there are areas which are seedy and best avoided by visitors.
The area around Ain Diab is a popular hang-out with a choice of bars. Women are likely to receive more attention than they care for in a lot of venues, so if you want a hassle-free drink then it's best to head to one of the recognised hotels.
Live music can be enjoyed in plenty of bars in the city centre, and ranges from sounds of the 1960s through to country, jazz and contemporary styles. The hotels tend to offer the best cultural shows and provide traditional Moroccan music and costumed entertainers. Casablanca has a busy festival programme and there are usually a number of events happening every month.
The Casablanca Festival is one of the major events of the year and features cinema, music, art and street theatre, with over 400 performers taking part. There are a couple of good jazz festivals, including Jazzablanca, which attracts European and Moroccan musicians performing to large crowds.
