Casablanca (Kasablanca) Travel Guide - Museums & Galleries
Hassan II Mosque: most visitors are attracted to this famous mosque to view the impressive building and are unaware that it actually contains a small museum. The mosque is situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, at the Muslim world’s westernmost point. It is without doubt the most impressive site in the city, and building work was completed in 1993.
It can hold up to 20,000 worshippers inside the mosque and there is room for another 80,000 on the courtyard outside. It is the second largest mosque in the world and the only one open to non-Muslims in Casablanca. The site covers an area of 22 acres and includes a Koranic school, library, museum, Turkish bath and conference rooms. The museum concentrates on Muslim history as well as the development of the Hassan II Mosque.
The museum is the first of its kind in the Arab world and consists of: the main room, which is used for exhibitions of photography, painting and sculpture; another three rooms that contain exhibits on religious and family life (clothing, Torahs, chanukah lamps, oil lamps, marriage contracts Torah covers); a further two rooms displaying complete Moroccan synagogues; and a video library, document library and photo library.
The museum can arrange guided visits, and sponsors seminars and conferences on Jewish-Moroccan history and culture. Group visits in English, Spanish, French and Arabic are available on request.
