For those on a tighter budget, there are plenty of places where you can find good local food at sensible prices. If you don't like the local food or wish to try something else, there are some excellent French and Spanish restaurants.
The city's best restaurants are generally found in the city centre, near the large shopping complex known as Centre 2000 and around the Corniche/Ain Diab area. There are some upmarket restaurants in the attractive French colonial buildings along the boulevards in the city centre, while the old medina is a great place to head to for sumptuous Moroccan cuisine at low prices.
Local cuisine
Moroccan cuisine is characterised by its variety of spices and mix of colonial and Arabic influences. The mouth-watering dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients and are not unbearably hot. Fresh fruits, vegetables and good quality meats are ingredients that are commonly used. Casablanca has a more regional bias to its cuisine than other parts of Morocco, as it draws on the nearby Mediterranean flavours.
Some of the traditional foods to look out for are tajine, which is a rich stew made of lamb, vegetables and various spices, and slowly cooked in olive oil in an earthenware pot. Djaja mahamara is another dish that is made from chicken stuffed with couscous, almonds and raisins.
