Following a destructive earthquake in 1961 that killed 15,000 people, the town was completely rebuilt to reflect a modern-day architecture that is faceless and dull. There are however, plenty of good places to stay, and the beaches are generally quiet and the weather reliable. There is a fine selection of water sports on offer and a good golf course nearby. The few historic sights remaining in Agadir tend to get crowded with the beach tourists looking for something to do. It suffered damaged during the earthquake in 1961 and the ramparts had to be repaired. There is very little to see inside the walls but the trip is worth it for the wonderful views over Agadir on one side and the rolling hills on the other. As with many other places in Morocco, local guides will try and offer their services by showing you around the ruins and explaining the history. If you are not interested, politely decline and try to avoid eye contact as they can be persistent. Taxis are available for the short trip to the top of the hill, and it's possible to walk back to Agadir in under one hour. Agadir Port: has been growing in importance in the last few years, and a significant portion of the country's sardine catch goes through this port. The best time to visit is early in the morning or dusk when the boats are returning and unloading their catch. You can wander along the quays and take a look at boats being built in the yard. The port is north of the town, past the main beach at the end of the boulevard Mohammed V. |
